Devon's Economic Base

Devon has a variety of businesses and industries that help to diversify its strong economic base. Situated just minutes from Edmonton’s International Airport and the Nisku Industrial Park, Western Canada’s largest industrial park, the roots of Devon come from the oil industry, and this sector continues to play a major role in the vitality of the community. 35 per cent of the people commute to Edmonton, 19 per cent commute to Nisku/Leduc/International Airport area, and 31 per cent work directly in Devon. The major industries in the town include research and development, oil and gas, light manufacturing, tourism, health, education and a burgeoning service sector. Major employers in Devon are Devon Research Centre Energy Research, Town of Devon Municipal, Devon General Hospital, Robins Oilfield Hauling ltd. and the BlackGold School Division. Devon’s growth has been consistent and strong for almost two decades, due to its “future look” planning, as well as its economic base.

 

Research Base:

The Devon Research Centre is one of North America's most modern research facilities. Both the Provincial Department of the Alberta Research Council and the Federal Department of the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology, also called the Western Research Centre, operate from this facility. The Western Research Centre examines hydrocarbon supply technologies including areas such as: produced water treatment, emulsions and sludge, bitumen and heavy oil recovery, environmental electrochemistry, and surface mining. Approximately 125 employees work in this building.
