Air Quality

The Town of Devon is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. As part of this goal, the Town has taken steps that will contribute to the health and safety of Devon residents.

The Town of Devon has recently installed Purple Air monitors in various locations to monitor and record air quality in each location in real-time. These monitors are located at:

  • Main Town Office – Indoor Monitor
  • Community Centre – Indoor Monitor
  • Public Works – Indoor Monitor
  • Public Works – Outdoor Monitor
  • Pool – Outdoor Monitor

The current status of each area is available on the Purple Air Map here.

The installation of these devices will improve the Town’s ability to operate in a safe and consistent way. Using these devices, the Town will monitor the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) using the following scale:

  • Low Risk (1-3)
  • Moderate Risk (4-6)
  • High Risk (7-9)
  • Very High Risk (10+)

Outlined below are the actions that the Town will take as the AQHI fluctuates.

AQHI 1-3:

Pool

  •  No changes.

Programs

  • No changes.

Events (Including Downtown Markets)

No changes.

AQHI 4-6:

Pool:

  • No changes.

Programs:

  • Maximize usage of indoor spaces.
  • Limit time spent outdoors with participants to activities like walking between indoor facilities or short sedentary outdoor activities (e.g., drawing with chalk).
  • Staff should be aware of participants with respiratory or allergen concerns.

Events (Including Downtown Markets)

  • Limit time spent outdoors where possible.

AQHI 7-9

Pool

  • All Town of Devon registered pool programs such as swim lessons and special events will be rescheduled or cancelled.
  • Public swim and lane swim times will be available.

Parks

  • Parks remain open for public use.
  • Expect disruptions of level of service in certain areas (ball diamond maintenance, grounds and lawn maintenance, tree maintenance, trail maintenance).

Programs:

  • Summer camps will never be cancelled due to air quality, but activities will be moved inside.
  • For programs that can be cancelled or postponed (e.g., summer shacks, party in the park, orienteering), participants will be notified of cancellations or postponements at least three hours prior to program start.

Events (Including Downtown Markets)

  • Limit time spent outdoors where possible.
  • Town of Devon staff will internally consider postponing events if a backup date is available. Should back-up date be utilized, communication will be sent out to public no later than 3 hours prior to event start.

AQHI 10+:

Pool

  • Pool will be closed.
  • Note: the Spray Park will be open regardless of pool closure.

Parks

  • Parks remain open for public use.
  • Expect disruptions of level of service in certain areas (ball diamond maintenance, grounds and lawn maintenance, tree maintenance, trail maintenance).

Public Works

  • Expect disruptions to outdoor activities.
  • Masks required for emergency activities.

Programs

  • Summer camps will not be cancelled due to air quality, but all activities will be moved inside. Outdoor fieldtrips will be rescheduled or cancelled.
  • Move all programs indoors when indoor facilities are available.
  • Cancel or postpone all non-essential programs with advance notice to participants.

Events (Including Downtown Markets)

  • Cancel or postpone events after consultation with the Manager of Recreation, Parks, & Culture.
  • Public notification is required at least three hours before event start.

Please note that parties separate from the Town of Devon that have their own air quality protocols and guidelines may continue to conduct services, programs, or games in the community regardless of the AQHI. In this case, Town of Devon services will be reduced as outlined in the protocol above.
