Special Ballots

Special Ballots

If you will be unable to attend a physical voting station on election day or one of the four advance voting days, you can request a special ballot for one of three reasons:

  • physical disability
  • out of jurisdiction (studying or working away from their place of ordinary residence, or vacationing during the election period)
  • are a candidate or working as an election worker

How do I recieve a Special Ballot?

You can request a Special Ballot by completing the Request for Special Ballot Package and submitting it to the Returning Officer:

  • In writing
  • By telephone (780-987-8310)
  • In person (Town of Devon Office, 1 Columbia Ave West, Devon, AB)
  • By email (MCrothers@devon.ca)

The elector choosing to vote by Special Ballot can make the request. The request cannot be made by another individual on the elector's behalf.

The Special Ballot package will be mailed to the elector or the Returning Officer will hold it for pick-up by the elector or the elector's designated upon request.  An elector may also have the package picked up by a commercial courier, friend or family member.  The person picking up the Special Ballot package will be asked by the Returning Officer to provide identification.

If the elector makes the request in person at the Returning Officer's office, the Special Ballot may be completed at the same time.

Completing and returning the ballot

Step-by-step instructions are included in the Special Ballot package. The elector must complete and sign Part 1 of the Special Ballot Certificate Envelope and must provide a copy of authorized identfication.

It is up to the elector to return the completed Special Ballot package to the Returning Officer in the electoral division where the elector is ordinarily a resident before the close of polls on polling day. The elector may return the package by mail, courier or by any other means.

The Returning Officer is not responsible for the collection of completed Special Ballot packages.

It is important to remember that the Special Ballot cannot be sent to the elector nor returned to the Returning Officer by facsimile or other electronic means.

By law, Special Ballot packages that are incorrect or incomplete, or received after the close of polls on polling day, will not be counted.
