The Town of Devon is encouraging Devon residents and businesses to help raise awareness about Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and to let the provincial government know Alberta is in dire need of an EPR program.
Extended Producer Responsibility is an environmental policy approach where producers are responsible for the cost of their product packaging from production through to the post-consumer stage of its life cycle.
Extended Producer Responsibility shifts the responsibility and cost of recycling from governments to producers and gives financial incentives for producers to create product packaging that is better designed for recycling at the end of its life cycle.
Alberta is one of the only provinces in Canada that does not currently have any plans to implement an EPR program. Without provincial legislation, Albertans will continue to cover the full cost of recycling both when purchasing products and dispose of them
