Treaties are permanent, legally binding agreements between the Crown and First Nations. These agreements were used as a means of defining Nation to Crown relationships and ensuring everyone could live together, peacefully and harmoniously, for the benefit of all.
There are eleven numbered Treaties across the land, with Devon being within Treaty Six Territory, within the Métis Nation of Alberta Region Four and within the territories of maskêkosihk and kiskayôs Nations. As a municipality, it is important for us to recognize not only the lands we live within, but to help educate one another on what the true intent of Treaty means.
For the first Treaty Six Day, Devon has partnered with neyaskweyahk (Ermineskin Cree Nation) to help provide the Devon community and surrounding area a fun, interactive and inclusive experience where people can learn about history, First Nations culture, and the Treaty Relationship.
We are looking for sponsors and vendors for the community event on Aug. 27.
