PROCLAMATION Town of Devon TREATY SIX DAY August 23, 2021 "We are all Treaty People"
Whereas, 145 years ago, this month, Treaty Six was first signed between the First Peoples and Crown representatives in Fort Carlton, in what is now known as Saskatchewan;
Whereas, the signing of Treaty Six is a sacred covenant established through Ceremony, with intentions of sharing the land and living together peacefully between the First Peoples and Settlers of the Crown;
Whereas, the Town of Devon recognizes the Spirit and Intent of Treaty Six and acknowledges the lands and territories we live within as Settler-Canadians; Treaty Six Territory, Métis Nation of Alberta Region Four, and the territories of Maskêkosihk and Kiskayôs First Nations;
Whereas, the Town of Devon acknowledges and celebrates the rich cultures, history, and contributions of the First Peoples and Métis Peoples of the land;
Whereas, the Town of Devon recognizes that Treaty Six will live on forever, as long as the sun shines, the grass grows and the waters flow;
Now, Therefore be it Resolved, that I, Mayor Ray Ralph, on behalf of the Town of Devon, do hereby proclaim August 23, 2021 and each year hereafter as Treaty Six Day in the Town of Devon, and further, extend Council's sincerest wishes and gratitude to all Indigenous Nations and Peoples of Treaty Six Territory and the Métis Homeland as we mark this important milestone.
