Mental Health and Wellness

Our Committment to Support Mental Wellness

The Town of Devon Community Services department aims to focus their work around creating a mentally healthy community. We do this using a mentla wellness lense with our work that we call #YouGotThis. To support this approach, the Town offers a variety of social, emotional, physical and nutritional programs, services and support groups that can support mental wellness.

#YouGotThis got its own song by local Devon musical artist Kym Simon to develop a song in support of the campaign. The lyrics aim to remind people that they are not alone.

So, what is #YouGotThis?

In short: a campaign aimed at promoting mental health and wellness in our community.

Having good mental health means having the ability to ‘bounce back’ from difficult experiences. The Town of Devon Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) and Recreation departments are working together on a long-term approach to support our residents in achieving this.

The Mental Health Commission of Canada writes that “by promoting mental health and preventing mental illness, we can…..reduce, to the greatest extent possible, the number of people whose mental health is poor, who experience the symptoms of mental health problems or illnesses, or who die by suicide”.

Developing good mental health is a personal journey but it doesn’t mean it has to be done alone. Through a focus on social, emotional, and physical activities, events and opportunities, the Town of Devon will promote, support and encourage the development of healthy behaviours that can help foster strong mental well-being for individuals and the community at large.

Information and programming provided is not intended as a replacement for diagnosis, treatment or referral. Individuals are encouraged to reach out to health professionals for further information.

The aim is to provide tools, opportunities and experiences to promote competence, enhance self-esteem, and build a sense of well-being for individuals.

We will do this by:

  • Sharing the positive message that ‘you can do this – you got this’ (and there is help out there)
  • Raising awareness of what mental health and wellness is and steps that can be taken to develop and/or improve it
  • Working in partnership with schools, agencies, and community groups to share the message
  • Providing opportunities to be active
  • Providing opportunities to learn new skills
  • Supporting the development of strong community connections to increase social wellness and decrease isolation
  • Continuing to provide the services which already exist to support those who are more at risk

“Strategies that build thriving communities foster mental wellbeing for everyone”. (Prevention Institute)
