Council approves 1.35 per cent municipal tax increase for 2019

Devon Town Council has approved the 2019 Operating Budget at their Budget Deliberations this past weekend. The 2019 Operating Budget includes a 1.35 per cent municipal tax increase for 2019, once again the smallest increase in the past six years.

“We are proud of our 2019 budget and the minimal impact it will have on Devon residents and businesses, while still allowing us to provide a high standard of service,” said Mayor Ralph. “Being fiscally accountable to our ratepayers is important to our Council and we will continue to do our part to ensure Devon is managed in a responsible way.”

“Administration recognized that Council was looking for a low municipal tax increase for 2019 due to the current economic climate,” said Tony Kulbisky, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Devon. "Our team worked hard to put together a budget that reflected this expectation and I feel we have achieved this with the 2019 budget."

For a household with a median assessed value of $316,500, the estimated impact of a 1.35 per cent tax increase is about $24.47 per year or $2.04 per month.

A key area addressed by Council in the 2019 budget was the Town’s Protective Services as an additional full-time RCMP Officer and two full-time daytime Firefighters to compliment the volunteer brigade were approved in the 2019 Operating Budget.

In late November, Council passed Devon’s 2019 utility rates with zero increases to wastewater, water, municipal solid waste and natural gas for 2019.

The final municipal tax rate will be approved in May 2019 and tax notices will be mailed out to Devon property owners on May 31 with payment due June 30. The Town also offers residents the opportunity to pay their property taxes on a monthly basis with its Preauthorized Payment Form available at the Town Office or on the Town of Devon website.
