2902 Community Events Council approves 1.98 per cent municipal tax increase for 2020 Devon Town Council approved the 2020 Operating Budget at their Jan. 13 Council Meeting with a 1.98 per cent municipal tax increase for 2020. Council also passed Devon’s 2020 utility rates prior to the new year with zero increases to wastewater, water, municipal solid waste and natural gas in 2020 for the second consecutive year and no increase to bulk water rates. "Our Council has continued to maintain or increase service levels for the community since being elected in 2017 while ensuring the Town is run in a fiscally responsible way,” said Ray Ralph, Mayor for the Town of Devon. “We recognize the current state of Alberta’s economy and have done our part over the past three years to mitigate the cost to residents by passing some of the lowest municipal tax increases on record for Devon, while holding the line on our utility rates for the second year in a row.” For a household with a median assessed value of $316,300, the estimated impact of a 1.98 per cent tax increase is about $36.70 per year or $3.06 per month. Property assessments are based off of the calculated value of a property as of July 1 of the previous year. "The 2020 Operating Budget presented some unique challenges as we had to look for ways to maintain our current service levels to the community amidst a reduction of provincial grants and funding,” said Tony Kulbisky, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Devon. “I am proud of the work done by our staff to find efficiencies and ensure we could deliver a budget as per Council’s direction with as minimal an impact to our ratepayers as possible.” The final municipal tax rate will be approved in May 2020 and tax notices will be mailed out to Devon property owners on May 31 with payment due June 30. The Town also offers residents the opportunity to pay their property taxes on a monthly basis with its Preauthorized Payment Form available at the Town Office or through the Town of Devon website. -30- For more information contact: Justin Janke Communications Coordinator Town of Devon P: 780-987-8302 E: JJanke@devon.ca Share Print
