2666 Community Events Bylaw in effect Nov. 24 until Devon is off watch status for 30 days As of Nov. 24, 2020, face coverings are mandatory in all indoor publicly accessible spaces within the Town of Devon, following a motion made by Devon Council to pass third reading of a Temporary Mandatory Face Covering Bylaw at their Nov. 23, 2020 Council Meeting. Enactment of this Bylaw means that face coverings are now required to be worn inside all public spaces within the Town of Devon including buildings and ride-for-hire services with some exceptions. This follows the approach of municipalities throughout the Edmonton Region who have engaged the medical experts to help manage rising COVID-19 cases as the majority of these communities, including Devon, are now under an “enhanced watch” with increased restrictions provided by the provincial government. Municipalities are put under a “watch” if they have 50 active COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population with a minimum of 10 active cases. As of Nov. 23, 2020, the Leduc County Region, which Devon is a part of, is sitting at 305 active cases per 100,000 and 73 active cases. “This is not a decision we took lightly as we have had numerous deliberations over the past months on our role when it comes to public health as a Municipal Council,” said Ray Ralph, Mayor for the Town of Devon. “Our approach to mandatory face coverings will be cooperative rather than punitive, and as this is now the norm throughout the Edmonton Region, we are trusting our residents to do the right thing and routinely wear a face covering when out in public to do their part to prevent the spread of COVID-19.” Bylaw Exceptions There are some key exceptions to the Bylaw including: Persons under the age of 10 Persons unable to place, use, or remove a face covering without assistance Persons unable to wear a face covering due to a mental or physical concern or limitation The Temporary Mandatory Face Covering Bylaw will remain in effect until Devon is taken off of a “watch” for 30 consecutive days. We ask that everyone continue to treat each other with respect in the community as you never know what situation another is in or who they are trying to protect.
