Town of Devon waste diversion program a huge success

After just a year of participating in the Devon Tim Hortons waste diversion program, Town of Devon staff have successfully diverted over 540 pounds of coffee grounds, filters and tea bags from the waste stream.

After seeing the great work done by the local Tim Hortons, the Town was inspired to do its part and reduce waste wherever possible at the Devon Town Office.

“It was incredible seeing the numbers, especially from a small office building like ours,” said Andy Tchir, Environment and Sustainability Coordinator for the Town of Devon. “Our staff recognizes that waste is a global issue and that if we want our residents to buy into reducing and disposing of their waste properly, we need to provide a great example.”

Organics from green bins, which includes food scraps and soiled paper, end up becoming nutrient-rich compost when disposed of properly.

A detailed sorting list of what goes where when it comes to waste is available at devon.ca/waste. For more tips being more environmentally conscious in your home, yard or in the community, go to devon.ca/environment.
