The Town of Devon is excited to announce the addition of a new Medicine Park on River Drive. The Town received funding for this project through the Government of Canada’s Healthy Communities Initiative and construction is slated to begin this summer.

The Canada Healthy Communities Initiative is a $31 million investment from the Government of Canada to transform public spaces in response to COVID-19. Devon is one of the lucky recipients of this grant, receiving a total of $97,400 in funding which is expected to cover the entire cost of the new park.

Construction plans for this project include the removal of the backstop at River Drive Diamond #2 and replacing it with a 30-foot concrete pad in the colors and orientation of the Medicine Wheel.

The Medicine Park will feature a stamped fire pit in the middle, curved benches surrounding the circle and a pathway from the River Drive trail to the Medicine Park. The space around the healing circle will be landscaped with native vegetation, space for the medicinal plants and interpretive signage explaining what medicines are available in the park.

“This new Medicine Park will be a permanent reminder of our continuing commitment to our Indigenous neighbours,” said Mayor Craddock. “We trust that it will provide the community with another beautiful space to enjoy and we look forward to construction beginning soon.”

The Medicine Park is expected to be complete in early summer of 2023 and the Town looks forward to opening the park up for the community as Devon continues walking the path towards reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.
