3000 Community Events Town continuing to explore virtual recreation programs for residents Given the circumstances around COVID-19 and the restrictions on mass gatherings and recreational facilities instituted by the Government of Alberta, the Town has made the difficult decision to not open the Devon Community Pool or Splash Park in Centennial Park for the 2020 summer season. We at the Town are as disappointed as you are that Devon will have no outdoor pool this summer, however unfortunately even if the restrictions are reduced later this summer, we need to do our part to protect the health and safety of our residents. As a result of the closure of the Devon Community Pool for the 2020 summer season, 14 seasonal pool staff will unfortunately not be hired. “We were hopeful that the curve would flatten and some of the restrictions on summer recreation would be lifted by the province by the end of April,” said Ray Ralph, Mayor for the Town of Devon. “We waited as long as possible to make this decision and are disappointed that we will not be able to provide our residents with summer pool programs or students with summer employment at the pool this year.” Virtual Recreation Programming Town staff have also been hard at work putting together plans to bring some of their spring and summer recreation/indigenous/FCSS programming and events online for residents to access from their homes. Some indigenous programs and workshops have already been scheduled including virtual bannock making and Residents for Reconciliation. Residents can keep up to date on all virtual indigenous engagement opportunities at devon.ca/indig-events. As spring an summer recreation/FCSS opportunities become available for residents, links and information on how to join virtually will be available on the Town of Devon community calendar at devon.ca/events, on our COVID-19 programs page at devon.ca/programs, through the Town’s social media accounts and in the Devon Dispatch.
