1036 Community Events In a significant stride towards climate resilience, Devon Council approved the Town's first Climate Adaptation Action Plan at their Feb. 26, 2024, Council Meeting. Aimed at addressing the most pressing climate challenges, this strategic plan outlines a tangible action plan with strategic measures to help the Town adapt to various local climate impact scenarios that carry a high-risk, high-consequence score. In collaboration with All One Sky, a non-profit, charitable organization, the Town conducted a detailed analysis of high-priority climate threats. This initiative involved comprehensive community engagement, including a Climate Adaptation Survey, multiple workshops, and a feedback session during the Town’s Community Awareness Night, to craft a targeted, custom adaptation strategy. “Climate adaptation plans serve as a compass for municipalities navigating the challenges of a changing climate, providing the blueprints for action and strategies for adaptive success,” said Torrie Santucci, Environment and Sustainability Manager for the Town of Devon. Projected climate risks for Devon include: Hotter temperatures with more frequent and intense heat waves and hot weather Warmer winters with fewer cold days, and less predictable ice and snow conditions Drier summer conditions with increased risk of drought and wildfires More extreme weather and storms including heavy rainfall, strong winds, hail, and lightning A longer frost-free season which may extend summer recreation and agricultural opportunities but will have implications for local ecosystems and wildlife “It is important for Council to be aware of climate threats facing our community,” said Mayor Craddock. “With this plan, we are better equipped to mitigate these future risks through educated and prudent budgeting of various environmental initiatives.” This initiative was fully funded by the Government of Alberta through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Climate Resilience Capacity Building Program, highlighting a collaborative effort towards sustainable municipal development.
