3626 Community Events Federal government applauds Town’s environmental leadership The Town of Devon has been recognized by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) for its environmental work achieving Milestone 1 of the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program. This Milestone signals the development of a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory for the Town’s municipal operations and the Devon community. In spring of 2017, Council directed that the Town join the PCP program in an effort to further its environmental plans, initiatives and programs. By joining the PCP program, Devon has gained access to funding from the FCM to assist the Town in exploring opportunities to explore ways to be a more sustainable community. “Reaching this Milestone is a big step for the Town of Devon as we strive to achieve our goal of becoming a net-zero community,” said Mayor Ray Ralph. “Milestone 1 shows where and how much energy is being used and can provide insight to inefficiencies that need to be addressed moving forward,” said Paresh Dhariya, Director of Planning and Infrastructure for the Town of Devon. PCP Milestones Milestone 1 – Developing a GHG and energy consumption inventory for the Town Milestone 2 – Create reduction targets (energy and emissions) Milestone 3 – Developing a local action plan to achieve the reduction targets Work has already begun on Milestone 2 – creating reduction targets for Devon’s energy and emissions. Since 2008, PCP member municipalities have voluntarily reported on over 800 projects that represent over $2.3 billion in investment and over 1.8 million tonnes in annual GHG reductions.
