121 Community Events EPR Program will see more household items available for recycling Starting April 1, 2025, Devon residents will see a positive change in how recycling is managed, as Alberta transitions to a new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework. This province-wide initiative is designed to improve recycling rates, reduce municipal costs, and support a circular economy by placing more responsibility on producers for the waste they generate. What is EPR? Extended Producer Responsibility is a policy that shifts the responsibility for recycling collection, processing, and disposal from municipalities to the producers of packaging and paper products. Under this model, companies that supply these materials will be accountable for their end-of-life management. Why Alberta is Making the Shift Traditionally, municipalities like Devon have funded and operated recycling programs. Alberta’s EPR regulation—passed in 2022—transfers that responsibility to producers, allowing for more standardized and effective recycling programs across the province. What This Means for Devon Residents Residents can expect a seamless transition, with no changes to their collection schedules or the core materials they currently recycle. Beginning Apr. 1, 2025, the list of accepted recyclable materials will be expanded both at the curb and at the Devon Recycle Depot. New items that will be accepted include: Plastic containers labeled #3–#7 (excluding plastic films and flexible plastics like clamshell containers) Aseptic containers (e.g., juice boxes, soup cartons) All aluminum packaging – including foil, trays, plates, and cans Looking Ahead Further enhancements are planned as the program matures, including the potential to add materials like glass and Styrofoam to the recycling stream.
