Virtual events planned all week for residents to learn about Indigenous Cultures

In honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day 2020, the Town of Devon is hosting an Indigenous Peoples Week Celebration from June 22-26 with virtual events scheduled throughout the week.

“Devon’s Indigenous Peoples Week marks another step forward on our path as a community towards reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples,” said Ray Ralph, Mayor for the Town of Devon. “Reconciliation is no easy feat and we have been doing our part to put in the work through relationship building with our Indigenous neighbours and creating a culture of learning and understanding throughout the Devon community.”

Instagram Campaign

We will be running an Instagram campaign all week to educate residents about Indigenous culture!

Indigenous Peoples Week Art Showcase

In honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day and Devon’s Indigenous Peoples Week Celebrations, we are asking residents to show their support of Indigenous Peoples and Reconciliation by submitting their own personal art creations of what reconciliation means to them.

Participants can email their submissions to mwincentaylo@devon.ca.

Treaty Six and Métis Nation Flag Raising

Join us on Friday, June 19 at 1 p.m.as we raise the Treaty Six Territory and Métis Nation of Alberta flags outside of the Devon Municipal Office!

Sunday, June 21

Address from Devon Mayor Ray Ralph

Mayor Ray Ralph will address the community to share the spirit of Indigenous Peoples Day and Devon's Indigenous Peoples week as the Town continues its journey towards reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.

Monday, June 22

Residents for Reconciliation - Dakota House, Who Am I

We would like to welcome Dakota House, an Indigenous Actor who has a successful career in numerous movies and television productions. With over 15 years of sobriety, Dakota strives to motivate, lead, empower our youth to succeed from coast to coast.

Tuesday, June 23

Mini-Drum Zoom Workshop

Join us on Tuesday, June 23 at 6 p.m. for a virtual drum making workshop! In honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day and Devon’s Indigenous Peoples Week, join in on this fun and free activity to make your very own mini drum!

Virtual Sharing Circle with Elder Sydney Courtepatte

Elder Sydney Courtepatte of Michel First Nation will be facilitating a special sharing circle for Indigenous Peoples Week.

Thursday, June 25

Virtual Movie Night – Treaty Walk: A Journey for Common Ground

We will be hosting an online movie night. This is part two of the Treaty Talk movie shown in Devon last October. Join us and guest Dr. Dianna Steinhauer of Saddle Lake Cree Nation as we watch the film together and hold a Q&A session after the film.
