Continuing our path of true reconciliation and action in the Town of Devon

Thursday, October 3rd marked an historic and emotional evening for the town, as Devon held its first engagement session with Elders, knowledge keepers and community members from Treaty Six and Eight Nations. This session allowed for invited delegates to discuss with council the town’s current and future engagement initiatives, provide feedback and direction, and to allow council an opportunity to learn more about Indigenous peoples, cultures, Treaty, and the connection to the land.

Feedback from this session will help guide the town on its path of true reconciliation and help determine key focus areas moving forward. A community open house is being scheduled for November 7th for the public to come and learn more about the work the town has been doing. Additional details about the upcoming community open house will be available closer to the event date and will be shared through the Town’s website, social media and newspaper advertising.

The Town of Devon acknowledges the land we are on, Treaty Six territory and the homeland of the Métis, which encompasses the traditional lands of the Cree (nehiyawak), Blackfoot (niitsitapi), Nakota (isga), Anishinaabe (anishinaabeg), and Métis (michif) Peoples, who are the legal caretakers and protectors of the lands and waters, and who have been here since time immemorial.

We acknowledge that Devon is within the traditional lands and territories of kiskayôs (Bobtail) and maskêkosihk (Enoch Cree) First Nations. We shall continue to uphold our Treaty responsibilities to all Peoples of Treaty Six and continue to work with all Indigenous Peoples towards a better future together.
