Town asks Devon residents and businesses to help shape future of recycling

Town Council is encouraging Devon residents and businesses to help raise awareness about Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and to let the provincial government know Alberta is in dire need of an EPR program.

Extended Producer Responsibility is an environmental policy approach where producers are responsible for the cost of their product packaging from production through to the post-consumer stage of its life cycle. This shifts the responsibility and cost of recycling from governments to producers and provides financial incentives for producers to create product packaging that is better designed for recycling.

Alberta is one of the only provinces in Canada that does not currently have any plans to implement an EPR program. Without provincial legislation, Albertans will continue to cover the full cost of recycling both when purchasing products and disposing of them,

“With recycling changing around the world, our Council is looking at ways we can do our part to reduce the impacts of additional waste to landfills from our community,” said Mayor Ralph. “Other provinces have implemented Extended Producer Responsibility, or similar programs, with great success and we believe that this is something our provincial government needs to pursue."

Show your support and that Devon cares about the future of recycling in Alberta by signing our letter template encouraging the provincial government to pursue an EPR program. All signed letters will be shared with Devon Council and forwarded to Devon’s provincial representative.
