5512 Community Events Cultural education and awareness opportunities available throughout summer The Town of Devon is proud to launch an Indigenous engagement and awareness initiative this summer consisting of several events and workshops that residents can attend to learn more about Indigenous culture directly from people of the many nations of Treaty Six territory. Indigenous Education and Cultural Awareness Events and Workshops July 16 – Treaty Talks: Sharing the River of Life public screening with Dr. Patricia Makokis July 30 – Michif Cultural Connections Workshop: Presentation on the history of the Metis people of the St. Albert/Edmonton area with traditional finger weaving workshop Aug. 6 – Beading workshop Aug. 9 & 10 – Treaty Six and Metis flag raising ceremony (tentative) Aug. 13 – Medicine pouch workshop Aug. 15 – Michif Cultural Connections Workshop (Medicine pouches, dreamcatchers and mini-drums (cost $50/person) Aug. 16 & 17 – Sixties Scoop Indigenous Society of Alberta national exhibit Bi-Giwen: Coming Home Truth Telling from the Sixties Scoop will be stopping in Devon (tentative) Aug. 20 – Jim Gladue Residential School Survivor workshop and presentation “This is the first step for Devon in response to the calls to action released by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada,” said Ray Ralph, Mayor for the Town of Devon. “Building solid relationships with our Indigenous neighbours is so important to us and we will continue doing our part to improve the relationships between our communities.” Additional details about the various cultural education and awareness events will be available closer to the event/workshop dates and will be shared through the Town’s website, social media and newspaper advertising. -30- For more information contact: Justin Janke Communications Coordinator Town of Devon P: 780-987-8302 E: JJanke@devon.ca Mitch Wincentaylo Indigenous Engagement Coordinator Town of Devon P: 587-597-0691 E: MWincentaylo@devon.ca Share Print
