4121 Community Events A new addition to the Devon river valley park system has added 3 km of trail along Battery Creek ravine and the top of the riverbank. Construction is now finished on this granular trail and is open to the public. The trail features a staircase and offers amazing vistas of the river as well as additional trail connectivity from the Town of Devon and Lion’s Campground. “Our trail system is the pride and joy of our community. With the new 3 km addition in Battery Creek, it now gives our residents and visitors 27 kms of trails to enjoy,” says Ray Ralph, Mayor for the Town of Devon. The project was funded through a partnership between the River Valley Alliance (RVA) and the Town of Devon. RVA projects are funded through a one-third cost sharing model among the three levels of government: municipal, provincial, and federal. Municipalities determine the projects — and their priorities — in their communities. The RVA previously contributed to Devon’s Voyageur Park trail development and enhancement of its parking lot. “Completing the Battery Creek trail in Devon is another exciting milestone in the River Valley Alliance Capital Program that will improve and expand public access to the river valley waterway and trail system,” said the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “Better recreational trails help people get outside, stay active and healthy, while showcasing our unique urban landscapes for the benefit of everyone. Canada’s infrastructure plan invests in thousands of projects, creates jobs across Canada, and builds stronger communities.” Connecting people to the river valley — and through the river valley, both literally and figuratively — is what the RVA is all about. This new trail supports continuous access to the river valley in the south west as part of the RVA’s Plan of Action. Over the last 7 years, the RVA and its 7 municipal shareholders have built 70 km of new trails, the Terwillegar footbridge, the West River’s Edge Pavilion in Fort Saskatchewan, five boat docks and Edmonton’s 100 street Funicular. “We’re thrilled to have worked with the Town of Devon on this trail project, and its completion brings us another step closer in the RVA’s vision to connect the entire North Saskatchewan River Valley park system from Devon to Fort Saskatchewan,” says RVA Executive Director Brent Collingwood. The RVA’s goal is to create trail connectivity and access through a balanced approach of preserving, protecting and enhancing one of the largest metropolitan river valley park systems in the world. Projects include trails, pedestrian bridges, and boat access. The ultimate objective of the RVA is to connect one continuous trail from Devon to Fort Saskatchewan, spanning approximately 100 km. rivervalley.ab.ca Share Print
