2021 Budget takes balanced approach to continuing Devon’s growth

Devon Council approved the 2021 Operating Budget at their Dec. 14 Council Meeting with a 2.62 per cent municipal tax increase for 2021.

For a household with a median assessed value of $308,900, the estimated impact of a 2.62 per cent tax increase is about $48.37 per year or $4.03 per month. Property assessments are based off of the calculated value of a property as of July 1 of the previous year.

Cost-saving Measures for 2021

Maintaining the services that residents expect and enjoy, while reducing the potential tax increase was a top priority of the 2021 Operational Budget.

To further reduce this impact, Council approved a number of cost-saving measures including a reduction in training and travel budgets for both Council and Town staff and various reductions in department budgets across the entire organization for 2021.

"This has been a tough year for many of our residents as we all continue to deal with the impacts of COVID-19 and this was front of mind for all of Council and Administration when developing the 2021 Operational Budget,” said Ray Ralph, Mayor for the Town of Devon. “We wanted to keep this increase as small as possible while ensuring we were doing our part to provide the new Council next fall with the resources they need to maintain the current level of service to our residents and continue bringing growth to Devon to increase our non-residential tax base.”

"This was a challenging budget as we tried to balance growth in our community with the current state of the economy amidst the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Tony Kulbisky, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Devon. “I am proud of the work our staff has done this year to continue providing exceptional services to our residents and for their continued commitment to achieving Council’s vision.”

2021 Utility Rates

Council also passed Devon’s 2021 utility rates in late October with zero increases to wastewater, water, municipal solid waste and natural gas in 2021 for the third consecutive year and no increase to bulk water rates for the second year in a row.

The final municipal tax rate will be approved in May 2021 and tax notices will be mailed out to Devon property owners on May 31 with payment due June 30, 2021.

The Town also offers a monthly payment plan for property taxes. Learn more about the monthly plan at www.devon.ca/paying-taxes.
