Framework to guide future of relationship building with Indigenous Peoples

Town Council has approved a document outlining best practices for the Town of Devon to engage with Indigenous Peoples. This framework, called Cultural Awareness and Relationship Building with Indigenous Peoples was approved at the Apr. 27, 2020 Council Meeting.

In early 2019, the Town of Devon made a commitment to work towards reconciliation and to strengthen its relationship with the local Indigenous community and neighbouring Treaty Six Nations and Métis organizations. The Framework was developed to assist Town of Devon leadership, staff and residents to better understand Indigenous Peoples, cultures, protocols and best practices when developing these relationships.

This framework will assist the Devon community in:

  • Building and maintaining beneficial long-term relationships with Indigenous Peoples.
  • Developing services and programs that will improve the lives of Indigenous and non-indigenous residents of Devon.
  • Developing a common understanding of the Treaty relationship.
  • Increasing knowledge and awareness of Indigenous Peoples and cultures.

The approval of this framework marks a historic moment for the Town as it shows leadership and commitment to reconciliation, the Treaty relationship, and a more inclusive and progressive community.

"Thank you to our staff for all of the work that has gone into the Indigenous Engagement Framework, a document that will empower us with the tools needed to become leaders in reconciliation in our community,” said Ray Ralph, Mayor for the Town of Devon. "I would also like to thank the Elders, members of Treaty Six and Eight Nations, and Métis members for working with us and helping guide Devon toward reconciliation in a genuine, holistic and meaningful way".
