Culture Days will run Sept. 1-30 with activities and events throughout the month

The Arts Association of Devon is thrilled to partner with the Town of Devon and the Province of Alberta for Devon Culture Days 2020.

“Alberta Culture Days demonstrates our vibrant arts, culture, diversity and community spirit”, said Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women, Leela Aheer. “I invite all Albertans to put on a mask and attend the wide array of in-person events happening across the province. With many options online, anyone, even those abroad, can experience Alberta from the safety and comfort of their own home.”

The Arts Association of Devon is one of the chosen organizations to receive grant funding to celebrate art and culture here in Devon, by inviting residents to contribute to a community art project.

The project will consist of painting repurposed wood pieces to correspond to two separate themes:

  • from Sept. 14-20, celebrate families and the outdoors
  • from Sept. 21-27, celebrate Devon’s history and Indigenous cultures.

Starting Sept. 14, residents will be encouraged to participate by registering for a Community Art Project Kit to be delivered to their door via contactless delivery or picked up at the Town of Devon office. The kits will include pieces of wood to be painted and brought to the Community Centre during the Devon Artisan Market on Sept. 20 and Sept. 27 or dropped off to the Town of Devon office from Sept. 20 – 27. The individual pieces will be mounted on an 8’x4’ plywood, sealed, and then presented as a celebration of what represents the Devon community.

“We take pride in our Devon art community and all of the work they do to engage our residents and get them involved with art projects here in Devon,” said Ray Ralph, Mayor for the Town of Devon. “Devon Culture Days 2020 is our chance to show our community spirit through a community-wide art project and I invite everyone, whether you are an artist or not, to join in and be a part of this amazing project.”

“We have wanted to do a community art project since the inception of this Association,” said Arts Association president Marc Haine. “I know that we have a lot of talented and passionate people in this Town, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with.”

Residents who would like to donate unpainted, untreated lumber for this project may do so until Sept. 12 at the Devon Recycle center. Anyone wishing to volunteer to assemble the pieces and help out with this project is encouraged to text Marc at 780-729-4932.
