Making Learning Visible at Black Gold

For the 2024-25 school year, the Black Gold School Division is continuing with the implementation of the Visible Learning framework, which seeks to help teachers teach better and students learn better so that students are actively engaged in their own learning and teachers are continuously working to improve their efficacy.

Our educators agree that prioritizing the framework’s proven practices can enhance student engagement and motivation. Instead of just telling students what to know, the Visible Learning approach encourages teachers to help students understand what they're learning and why it matters.

Our teachers will be there every step of the way, giving students clear feedback on progress so that they can keep improving.

Visible Learning recognizes the importance of catering to the diverse needs of students. By implementing strategies that allow for differentiation, our teachers can better address individual learning styles, abilities, and interests, thereby promoting greater inclusivity and equity in their increasingly complex classrooms.

It also promotes collaboration among students and encourages peer-to-peer interaction and learning, which helps the students better understand concepts, improve communication skills, and foster camaraderie within the classroom.

Through its transformative approach to education, Visible Learning holds the potential to revolutionize the educational landscape to ensure that all students have the opportunity to exceed what they thought was possible, and this will equip them for success in a rapidly changing world.

Tom's Walk for Mental Health

Tom's Walk: A Journey of Hope and Connection

Tom's Walk is more than just a walk; it is a heartfelt journey that began in 2018, just six weeks after we lost Tom to his battle with mental illness. Every May since then, we have gathered for Tom’s Walk—an annual memorial event that unites us in remembrance and support.

By 2024, Tom's Walk evolved into the Tom's Walk for Mental Health Society, a non-profit organization with a special place in our hearts. This transformation reflects our collective efforts and the meaningful impact we've made together. This walk is not only about addressing mental health challenges; it is a safe space for sharing our stories and supporting one another. It is a place where we can honor the memories of our loved ones and hear their names spoken aloud.

Our mission is simple: to share resources, ignite hope, and raise funds for The SILA Skills Group, which conducts workshops and training aimed at building resilience and fostering connections.

This year, we extended our outreach by participating in various community events, including the Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament, the Outdoor Summer Market, and the Lions Farmer’s Market. We are immensely grateful to these organizations for allowing us to share the message of Tom’s Walk with all we met. Our participation in these events has created incredible moments of connection and support, and we couldn't have achieved this without help.

As we move into this school year, we are excited to continue selling Tom’s Quote t-shirts, enabling students and adults to spread a positive message in their interactions. These shirts feature Tom’s own words—true affirmations that resonate deeply. We also aim to engage with youth about the core message of hope that Tom’s Walk embodies. After all, T.O.M. can also stand for The Other Me. Each of us carries a part of ourselves that often goes unseen, which deserves understanding, value, and support.

We look forward to continuing our message of hope and connection throughout the year.
